John Waltz is Vice President, Technical Services for The Wicks Group Consulting, specializing in operations, and drawing on more than 35 years of experience as an FAA inspector and international aviation safety consultant. During his career with the FAA, John worked in international aviation and special projects, and became inspector-qualified in both operations and airworthiness. He served as Flight Standards’ Technical Lead, assisting several foreign civil aviation authorities with achieving Category 1 status under the FAA International Aviation Safety Assessment (IASA) program. He has also supervised the introduction of new aircraft for the FAA.

Since retiring from the FAA, John has assisted with the firm’s IASA projects for the civil aviation authorities of India, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, and Trinidad and Tobago. He also conducts simulator check rides in Boeing 777 and 737 aircraft for various civil aviation authorities. John also has extensive experience teaching in the area of aviation safety inspection for the FAA Academy and as part of specific projects for civil aviation authorities and operators.

Representative Experience

  • Providing IASA audit preparation technical assistance and training services to civil aviation authorities in India, Trinidad and Tobago, Azerbaijan, and Ukraine
  • Serving as the FAA Flight Standards Technical Lead for the “Third Border Initiative” in the Caribbean, providing technical support on operations and airworthiness issues to civil aviation authorities in the region that resulted in the achievement of IASA Category 1 ratings for three countries in five years
  • Teaching FAA Academy courses to more than 3200 aviation safety inspectors, including Government Safety Inspector (GSI)-Operations, GSI-Airworthiness, and GSI-Personnel Licensing; ICAO Chicago Convention & Annexes for FAA Inspectors, Aircraft Performance, Aviation Training Organization Certification, Advance Avionics and Certification Process for RNP approaches
  • Providing on-the-job training to more than 400 foreign civil aviation authority aviation safety inspectors
  • Serving as the FAA Flight Standards Technical Lead for the “Saudi Arabian Airlines Total Fleet Renewal Project,” providing technical support in engineering, operations and airworthiness that resulted in the introduction of four new fleets in one year and an IASA Category 1 rating for Saudi Arabia
  • Serving as the FAA Principal Operations Inspector American Trans Air Indianapolis, providing supervision for the introduction of B-757, B- 727 and L-1011 aircraft and performing ETOPS certification
